President-elect Donald Trump, yesterday, tapped Robert Lighthizer to serve as U.S. Trade Representative (USTR). The American Sugar Alliance released the following statement about the selection:
Mr. Lighthizer’s commitment to strong enforcement of U.S. trade agreements and laws make him a perfect choice for USTR. His work and his leadership will be of the utmost importance given the rampant rise in agricultural subsidization by foreign countries.
America’s sugar producers look forward working closely with the incoming USTR and his team to target and tear down the unfair trading practices and subsidies that are grossly distorting the world sugar market. We support a free market that rewards the most efficient producers, which is why we have publicly pledged to eliminate U.S. sugar policy when other countries roll back their market-manipulating actions.
The American Sugar Alliance represents the country’s sugarbeet and sugarcane producers, who back 142,000 jobs in 22 states.
