WASHINGTON — After reviewing the official text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal the American Sugar Alliance issued the following statement:
“We have carefully examined the final language and details of the Trans-Pacific Partnership and are pleased to confirm that America’s trade negotiators delivered on their pledge to not undermine U.S. sugar policy.
“America’s sugar producers are grateful for the hard work and professionalism of United States Trade Representative Michael Froman, U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, and their teams. Their commitment to ensuring that no-cost U.S. sugar policy continues to function as Congress intended, and their diligent communications with our industry throughout the process, is commendable.
“We look forward to working with both the USTR and the USDA in the future as U.S. sugar producers fight for a global sugar market that is free of subsidies and trade-distorting policies.”
