5 Reasons to Support U.S. Sugar Policy
Capitol Hill will be extra sweet next week. Sugarbeet and sugarcane farmers will be taking time away from their farms to advocate for policies that allow our producers to keep it sweet in America.
Here are 5 sweet reasons to support America’s sugar producers and U.S. sugar policy:
- U.S. sugar policy puts American food security and American farmers first: American farmers supply about 75% of the U.S. demand for sugar. U.S. sugar policy ensures that the supply of an essential ingredient like real sugar is not entirely in the hands of foreign governments.
- American-made sugar is good for the economy: Our 11,000 family farmers support more than 151,000 good jobs across more than 2 dozen states. We contribute more than $23 billion annually to the U.S. economy.
- American-made sugar is good for consumers: Each year, we invest heavily in a strong domestic supply chain to ensure that our customers – from food manufacturers to everyday Americans stocking their pantry – always have sugar available.
- America’s sugar industry creates jobs and drives community investment: In many rural areas, the sugar industry is the cornerstone of local and regional economies. In some cities, it is often one of the few remaining manufacturing employers. The survival of many American communities is tied to the survival of local sugar operations.
- America’s sugar industry is efficient and productive: American sugar producers are efficient and productive, and they meet some of the highest labor, environmental, and food quality standards in the world. Producers utilize all parts of the crop to reduce waste and create beneficial co-products.
A strong U.S. sugar policy puts American family farmers and workers first and keeps America reliably supplied with sugar. This is the message our farmers will be carrying to Capitol Hill next week.
